Elephant Stool | Black
by Sori Yanagi | Vitra
Sori Yanagi’s Elephant Stool is one of the most famous examples of Japanese post-war design. Clear in form and function, it is a perfect example of Yanagi’s interest in organic shapes, and his desire to combine western industrial designs with Japan’s native artisanal traditions.
We love the compact shape, and the effortless shape of the arches. We have a particular fondness for stools in general, hospitable pieces of furniture that are perfect for accommodating unexpected but very welcome guests.
A family business, Swiss company Vitra is a design house with a focus on creating innovative products and concepts with great designers. The designer is integral to how Vitra work; they see them not simply as contractors but as authors. They make products that avoid the superfluous and last for a very long time.
